Strengths: Play all video formats on all media, excellent picture & sound quality
Weakness: The remote control looks a bit "cheap" (but functional)
The DVD players are so boring these days. But this DVD is not. It supports all the video formats that the majority of other DVD players don't. The video clarity is impressive with progressive scan (I have not tried the HDMI option so I cannot comment on this). If you follow the instruction of one of the reviewer to set the region code to 0, this DVD is really a universal DVD player. It will play...
Strengths: This machine can play DIVX even from USB, all formats.
Weakness: The DVP5960 does not support DTS (Digital Theater Sound).
It was a replacement of DVP642. It provided the great improved fuctions(DIVX, USB)and resolutions(HDMI). Plays all discs - VCDs, CD-RWs, CDs, DVDs, MP3s, Div-X and just about anything that won't play on other DVD players. It even has a USB connection in the front which you can use to directly plug in a zip drive or another device like a hard drive, although I have not used this feature yet. You...
Strengths: Supports all DIVX formats, up to 6. Front USB port for external HDs, flash drives, etc.
Weakness: No S-video connector. Directory viewer limited to first 8 characters, difficult to select videos with long filenames.
This player is an excellent successor to the Philips 642. It had no trouble with any of the DIVX files or media I tried with it. But it's real strength lay with it's USB connectivity. Simply by adding an external HD, you now have an HTPC-lite, capable of playing almost any video file. No support for S-video or DTS might bother some people, but not an issue for me.
Strengths: Can read almost all the format, include USB port and HDMI
Weakness: Loading is slow, remote control is slow too
I bought this DVD player with a MIR which cost me about $66. It looks very cool, and can read all the formats I have. Even more, it can read both PAL format DVD produced in China and NTSC format DVD produced in USA. And the USB port allows me to listen the MP3 music without making CD. But the problem is that the loading is really slow, and the remote control is slow too. After all, it's worthy...
Strengths: USB connection, HDMI, DivX capabilities, Digital out, Plays almost everything!
Weakness: No S-video, no optical out
I upgraded from the DVP642 solely because this one had the USB connection. I got tired of burning CDs/DVDs. Now I can just plug in my flash drive and rewrite again.. all a lot faster. Has worked great so far. The only thing I missed in this one is that this has no s-video out. I don't have an HDTV so I don't care about the other connectors. I don't know why they took that feature out. Makes no...
Strengths: USB input, plays many formats
Weakness: overall, poor performance; distorts 4x3 in hdmi [see comments]
other than the ability to play thru USB... I was disappointed by the performance of this unit. Many little glitches, like having to wait several seconds before the 'open drawer' will work. The re-cue feature on 'stop' only retains memory for about 5-minutes... otherwise, you'll have to start the disc from scratch. The remote is small & poorly laid-out. My big disappointment was on the HDMI...
Strengths: Price, Picture quality, Upscaling to 1080i, nice design, plays both PAL and NTSC DVDs on your NTSC TV, USB connector, if it is round with a hole in the midle it will play it. DO NOT play Dougnuts!
Weakness: NO DTS, complicated set up Audio for 5.1, no optical audio connector
I recently replaced my trusted Philips DVP642/37 DVD player with this unit. I recently purchase a Philips LCD 37" HDTV and I wanted to be able to watch DVDs using 720p or 1080i. My requirement was simple, Inexpensive, could play PAL DVDs (since I have several european concert DVDs)on my NTSC tv, HDMI connectors, Digital outputs to connect to 5.1 Receiver. And be able to play a myriad of discs...
Strengths: good picture
Weakness: when you use hdmi and coax for audio output for your dolby home theatre this outut is stereo only.
forget your expensive 5.1 setup.all you can get is lousy stereo.use of hdmi for picture downgrades coax audio output to stereo .bluntly confirmed by philips tech support rep. goodbye philips
Strengths: Plays everything. Easy to install.
Weakness: Remote control is not powerful. Impossible to eject s disk in Standby mode.
Good system. Finally plays all formats and zones. Simple plug and play setup. Very few negative moments, such as very weal remote control - have to point it directly to the player. Also, disks could not be ejected from the StandBt mode - have to turn on the system. Other than that - no serious drawbacks.

Great DVD player for this price.
Strengths: 1. Great picture quality. 2. HDMI port. 3. USB port for playing Divx files from flash drive. 4. cool design
Weakness: 1. No DTS support 2. No optical and S-video port.
I did quite a research before I bought this DVD player. This is a player which can play Divx files directly through USB port. I tested a Divx file using my 1G EDGE flash drive and it works great. The quality of the picture is very impressive in my 27 inch LCD TV when playing DVDs. The DVP5960's chipset is MediaTek MT1389. The look of this DVP5960 is also very impressive. It is slim and the front...
